History of the Freehold Church of Christ
Because of the efforts of Joe and Lois Lemmons, on February 15, 1981, ten individuals began meeting at the Freehold YMCA for regular Sunday worship services and Bible classes.
In August 1983 the congregation began its quest to find permanent home. On Sunday, December 2, 1984, approximately 98 people gathered together to worship in its new building on Strickland Road. In the fall of 1993 the congregation added a fellowship hall and six classrooms to accommodate its expanding needs.
Through the years, in addition to worship services and Bible classes, the congregation has endeavored to reach out to the community through various programs, including gospel meetings, guest speakers, seminars on marriage and family, teen events, and its annual Vacation Bible School.
On October 24, 2000, evangelist Tae Whan Lee began an outreach to the Korean community. Offering Sunday worship services and Bible classes.
The congregation also sponsors a scholarship program through Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, to encourage evangelists to work with congregations in the northeast United States. In addition, it helps to support missionaries in Europe, Africa, and Brunswick, New Jersey.
In recent years the congregation has responded to disasters resulting from the tsunami in Asia, hurricanes in Florida and Haiti, and most recently, Hurricane Katrina. Donations were forwarded to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief in Nashville, Tennessee, and the White's Ferry Road Relief Ministries in West Monroe, Louisiana. These organizations work with congregations located in the affected areas to help members and nonmembers alike.
Through the years the Lord has blessed the congregation in its efforts to teach and encourage one another and to reach out to the community in the Freehold area.
